Abstract

715,812. Fumigating devices. MURPHY CHEMICAL CO., Ltd., and WALPOLE, J. L. Sept. 27, 1951 [Aug. 24, 1950], No. 21015/50. Class 81(1) A fumigating device comprises a canister 5' containing a solid self-combustible composition 6 and a completely closed receptacle 11. containing a liquid vaporizable pest-controlling substance absorbed in an inert absorbent material which is located outside the said composition on a perforated baffle 8 and which is wholly or partially destructible by the heat of combustion of the said composition to release the pest-controlling substance. In a modification (not shown) the receptacle 11 rests on a support which is spaced from the perforated baffle and self-combustible composition. The receptacle may be of a material such as nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, gelatine or glass which is fusible or combustible. Suitable liquid pestcontrolling substances referred to are tetraethyl pyrophosphate, hexaethyl tetraphosphate, diethyl para-nitrophenyl monothiophosphate, mixtures of diethyl and dimethyl para-nitrophenyl monothiophosphate, #-butoxy-#<SP>1</SP>-thiocyano-diethyl ether, 1:2:4:5:6:7:8:8-octachloro-4 : 7-methano- 3a : 4:7 : 7a-tetra-hydroindene, nicotine, pyrethrum and bis-(bis-dimethylamino)- phosphorous anhydride. A vaporizable substance, for example naphthalene, may be incorporated in the self-combustible composition. Solid vaporizable pest-controlling substances such as azobenzene, benzene hexachloride or DDT may also be incorporated. The self-combustible composition comprises a mixture of a combustible material, e.g. sucrose, lactose, starch, mannitol, sorbitol or thiourea, with an oxygenyielding substance, e.g. KClO 3 NaClO 3 , KNO 3 , NaNO 3 . A modifier such as urea may be added. Specification 621,894 is referred to.
