Abstract

715,659. Lubricating. RUSTON & HORNSBY, Ltd. July 15, 1953 [April 17, 1952], No. 9636/52. Class 12(3) Apparatus for automatically supplying lubricant to a capillary action lubricator of the type in which the lubricant is fed from a receptacle by one or more wicks, comprises a rotary distributer mounted on a driving shaft so as to permit a predetermined relative angular movement between it and the shaft, the distributer being housed within a casing supplied with lubricating oil under pressure and provided with resilient means whereby, on rotation of the shaft, intermittent rapid angular movements of the distributer take place and during each movement oil is discharged through an exit port leading to a wick feed. In the arrangement shown in which the invention is applied to wick feed lubricators for rocker arm valve-actuating mechanism of a compression ignition oil engine, a casing 4 is divided into a compartment 6 for housing worm gearing 46, 47 and a compartment 5 for receiving lubricating oil fed under pressure through a passage 17 connecting the compartment 5 with a filter chamber 13. The worm wheel 46 is secured to the end of a shaft 43, the other end of which carries a star-shaped disc 18. The disc has a central bearing sleeve 31 formed with an axial slot 41 to accommodate a key 42 projecting from the driving shaft whereby lost motion is provided between the shaft and the sleeve. Movement of the disc is resisted by a spring-pressed plunger 22. The disc is provided with an axial port 35 which as the disc rotates registers with ports 39 communicating with piping 38 leading to wick feed lubricators. The driving shaft 43 is rotated slowly from the worm gearing and through the key 42 and slot 41 drives the disc 18. When a projection 19 on the disc passes the plunger 22 the disc is urged forward gently by the spring 27 of the plunger and comes to rest with the plunger in a depression 20 until the lost motion between the shaft 43 and the disc 18 has been taken up. The pressure of the spring 27 is adjustable whereby the time during which the port 35 is in register with a port 39 may be varied. The disc 18 is normally held against a wall 9 by oil pressure, but when the engine has been idle for some time, oil may be fed through all the ports 39 by a hand priming pump, in which case the disc 18 is removed from the wall 9 by.actuation of a push button 57.
