Abstract

738,188. Lubricating. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd. Jan. 20, 1954 [Feb. 12, 1953], No. 4007/53. Class 12 (3). In a lubricating apparatus of the kind in which a lubricator is operated at intervals to discharge lubricant under pressure through a number of outlets to several points requiring lubrication, the volume of lubricant delivered to any one or two points can be reduced by the provision of a valve device containing a pistonvalve element which is operated by the pressure of lubricant to supply through a first outlet a quantity of lubricant less than that discharged through the lubricator and then supply through a second outlet lubricant remaining under pressure on the inlet side of the valve. The valve device shown comprises a housing 1 provided with screw-threaded sockets 2, 3 to enable the device to be interposed between the lubricator (not shown) and the point requiring to be lubricated. A bore 4 between the sockets is fitted with a piston 8 which is formed with a stem portion 9 and an axial passage 13 communicating through a transverse passage 14 with a circumferential groove 15. The bore 4 communicates with a passage 7 leading to an outlet 6 adapted to be connected to another point requiring to be lubricated, to the inlet of the lubricator or to the lubricant reservoir. The stem portion 9 has a coned valve face for engagement with an annular valve seat 11 surrounding a reduced portion 5 of the bore 4. Lubricant supplied under pressure to the valve inlet 2 presses the piston 8 inwardly against the action of a spring 12 and lubricant is forced out through the outlet 3. When the stem 9 engages the valve seat 11 the groove 15 in the piston 8 registers with the passage 7 so that some of the lubricant is discharged through the opening 6. When lubricant pressure is released the piston 8 slowly returns to its normal position lubricant passing from the inlet 2 between the periphery of the piston and the inner surface of the bore 4 and into the space enclosing the spring 12.
