Abstract

In the resist-printing of textile materials consisting of or containing non-cellulosic fibres, e.g. cellulose acetate, wool, silk, nylon and perlon, a water-soluble aldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde, or a substance, such as hexamethylene-tetramine, which yields such an aldehyde on heating, is applied to the material in selected areas either before or after the material has been impregnated with a vat dyestuff and thiourea dioxide, whereby on subsequent drying, ageing with saturated steam at a temperature of about 100 DEG C. and oxidizing, those areas of the material where the aldehyde is applied or liberated remain substantially uncoloured. Coloured resist effects may be obtained by the addition of suitable dyestuffs, e.g. "Soledon" (Registered Trade Mark) dyes, pigment suspensions, dispersed acetate dyes and acid wool dyes, to the aldehyde printing paste. Examples of the process applied to cellulose acetate and woollen materials are given.
