Abstract
714,627. Acoustic delay lines. ELLIOT BROS. (LONDON), Ltd. Feb. 23, 1953 [Feb. 22, 1952], No. 4787/52. Class 40 (8) An acoustic delay line comprises a main length of a solid material having good acoustic pulse transmission properties and two end elements, associated with the input and output comprising magnetostrictive material. The main length 1 of the line is preferably made of a material in which the velocity of sound is substantially independent of temperature. Where the line 1 passes through the input or output coil 9 it is coated with a layer 6 of magnetostrictive material such as nickel which is matched to the rest of the line by a taper 7. Alternatively, these portions of the line may consist of short lengths of nickel wire brazed to the main length 1. To prevent reflections each end of the line is immersed in a body of grease 4 contained in a tube 5. The main length of the line is in the form of a zig-zag or flat helix and may lie in a groove formed in an insulating carrier plate. Alternatively, the line may be surrounded by a loosely-fitting sleeve which may itself lie in the groove. Where the line is in the form of a flat helix it may be carried by a number of slotted radial supports 2. The output coil 9 may be mounted for movement to adjusted positions along the line 1.
