Abstract
A grid wire for an electron discharge device comprises a wire of base metal or base metal alloy and a surface layer of noble metal or metals, the surface layer having been applied to the wire as a solution of at least one noble metal sulphoresinate or resinate in an organic solvent such as an essential oil and heated to burn away the organic matter. The solvent may also contain more volatile constituents such as chloroform or carbon tetrachloride. Two or more applications of solution may be made to increase the thickness of the layer, the wire being fired after each application or only after the first application. Firing temperatures may be between 300 and 600 DEG C., or between 600 and 1000 DEG C. when using a hydrogen atmosphere. Base metal wires of molybdenum, tungsten, nickel, steel or molybdenum-tungsten alloy, and solutions of silver, gold, platinum and palladium are referred to. The Provisional Specification refers to the coating of metals generally by such treatment.
