713,623. Disc brakes. HILGER, O. and BUSCH, W., [trading as BERGISCHE STAHLINDUSTRIE]. Dec. 5, 1952 [Dec. 7, 1951; March 1, 1952], No. 30911/52. Class 103(1) [Also in Group XXII] A disc brake has discs d, which are preferably of cast iron or steel, having between them cooling ribs b of a light metal or alloy which are wholly or partly secured to the discs by a method of compound casting such as the Al-Fin process whereby the steel or iron part is wholly immersed in a melt of aluminium until a layer of FeAl 3 of about 0.02 to .03 mm. is formed, the part provided with the layer then being set in a sand mould and a part of aluminium or aluminium alloy cast thereon. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the cooling ribs b are cast on to the two separate brake discs d which are secured to the hub e by bolts i. Strengthening ribs a link the two castings. In a second arrangement in which the two brake discs are integral with the hub, cooling ribs b, as shown in Fig. 6, are formed on a single casting having a wavy shape strengthening rib a as shown. In another arrangement, shown in Figs. 9 and 10, the cooling ribs b again form part of a unitary casting but extend right across the gap between the discs. The ribs b, a guide rib f, and a carrying body or ring g surrounding the hub e are formed as one casting.
