Abstract

Vegetable textile fibres, such as are obtained after chemical retting of lengths of raw fibrous materials and which are still coated with a sheath of pectic substances and hemicelluloses in colloidal form, are degummed by submitting them to treatment with water containing a surface-active agent, than to treatment with an aqueous solution of an acid so as to flocculate and precipitate the colloid coating substances, and finally to rinsing with water. In a modification of the process, the two treatments are combined so that the fibres are subjected to the action of a single liquid containing the surface-active agent and the acid which is capable of flocculating and precipitating the colloids. The lengths of raw fibrous materials are the crude stalks which have been submitted to green scutching to remove the greater part of the ligneous coating substances. The treatment may be applied to fibres of ramie, flax, hemp, urena, ambary or jute. The surface-active agent may be a sulphated oil (copra, castor or linseed), a sulphonated fatty acid or ester, a sulphonated or sulphated fatty alcohol such as sulphonated or sulphated lauryl alcohol, or hydroxy ethylamides of palm-nut oil acids. The acid used may be organic or inorganic, e.g. acetic, sulphuric or hydrochloric. In an example, the retted flax fibres are de-gummed by passing them first through a bath of water containing 0.5 per cent. by weight of a wetting agent consisting of a condensation product of oleic acid with the sodium salt of isethionic acid, and then through a bath of water containing 0.7 per cent. by weight of acetic acid. In other examples retted flax, ramie and jute are passed through single treatment baths containing sulphoricinoleic acid and sulphuric acid, or lauryl sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid, or ethyl pyridinium bromide and sulphuric acid.
