Abstract

309,213. Vickers, Ltd., and Lucas, O. D. Dec. 8, 1927. Retting.-Retted and unretted and scutched or unscutched flax or the like having nodes are subjected to chemical treatment whereby the nodes are destroyed or weakened and all the ultimate fibres remain unbroken after passing through a carding or other suitable process to separate the ultimate fibres from each other. The treatment produces a fibre suitable for spinning by,machinery of the kind used in cotton mills. The scutched flax preferably unretted is first treated with 3-5 per cent caustic soda solution at 150‹-170‹ C. for 1-4 hours, to which solution a plasticizer consisting of 1¢ per cent Turkey red oil and ¢ per cent linseed oil may be added. The material is then washed, preferably in soft water, and immersed in a cold bath containing ¢-2 per cent hydrochloric acid, again washed and then dried for spinning. In treating unscutched flax the material is first digested in water at 182‹ C., the furfural produced is distilled off and the product is treated as above. The fibres can then be separated by either wet or dry processes. Jute, hemp, ramie and the like may be similarly treated, and any other chemical process for destroying or weakening the nodes may be used.
