Abstract

211,739. Postiglione, M. April 3, 1923. Retting.-In a method of treating textile plants for extracting the fibres, the plants are dipped for 20 minutes in a boiling bath containing a weak solution of sodium bicarbonate and neutral calcium carbonate, the bark and the ligneous part are then separated from the alburnum or fibrous part, after which the stalks are passed between pairs of cylinders whereby the ligneous part breaks up and falls out. The stalks are then immersed in a second stronger solution of the same substances and de-gumming is effected, the gum being transformed into a mucilage, which is expelled by a squeezing machine, leaving the strands or fibres quite free and having maximum length, strength and brilliance. Flax, hemp, and the like, and the branches of the mulberry tree may be treated as above: agave and like pulpy material is first dried, or the pulp removed mechanically.
