Abstract

713,341. Wrenches. GARDNER, I. E. W., and MAUN INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 23, 1952 [Aug. 1, 1951], No. 18173/51. Class 61 In an adjustable spanner or wrench comprising a handle part carrying a fixed jaw and an adjustable jaw movable along the handle part, a toothed, wedge shaped locking member carried by the movable jaw and spring urged against an inclined guide surface thereon is adapted to engage rack teeth provided on the handle part to automatically lock the movable jaw against displacement in a direction away from the fixed jaw. The movable jaw 4 is bolted at 12 to a U-shaped member 11 which slidingly embraces the handle 1. The toothed member 7 is accommodated in a longitudinal recess 6 in an extension 5 of the jaw 4, the recess having an inclined side 8 which provides a guide for the inclined surface 9 of the toothed member. A compression spring 10 urges the toothed member against the side 8 of the recess. On movement of the jaw 4 towards the fixed jaw the toothed member 7 recedes into the recess 6 and rides over the toothed rack 3. On movement in the opposite direction, the member 7 is thrust into engagement with the rack. The toothed member is releasable from the rack by a finger operated pin 13.
