Abstract
Unsaturated fatty acids are converted into soaps of saturated fatty acids containing fewer carbon atoms in the molecule by a modification of the Varrentrapp reaction in which the alkali metal soaps of the unsaturated acids are heated with aqueous caustic alkali at temperatures above 300 DEG C., preferably 350-450 DEG C., in the presence of at least 20 per cent. of water, based on the weight of fatty acid in the original soaps. The soaps of the unsaturated fatty acids may be formed by neutralization of the acids with alkaline-reacting salts, such as sodium carbonate, in which case only one mole of caustic alkali is required theoretically for the reaction per double bond per mole of soap, but if the free fatty acids are used as starting material two moles of alkali are required theoretically per mole of an unsaturated fatty acid containing one double bond. In either case, it is preferred to use 0.25 moles excess of caustic alkali, which may be caustic soda, caustic potash or a mixture of the two. Examples are given of the treatment of a technical olein, fish blubber fatty acids and soya oil fatty acids.
