Abstract
Cyclohexanone oxime is prepared by reducing nitrocyclohexane with ammonia in the presence of a nickel catalyst under pressure and at an elevated temperature. The reduction can be carried out in the presence of inert organic solvents such as water-miscible diluents, for example, alcohols. The nickel may be in the form of a nickel skeleton catalyst, e.g. as obtained by treating nickel aluminium alloys with aqueous alkalis, or nickel deposited on inert carriers, e.g. on pumice, clay pieces, aluminium oxide or kieselguhr. The nickel catalyst may contain cobalt, chromium, zinc, manganese, copper, alkaline earth or alkali metals. In the examples cyclohexanone oxime is obtained by reducing nitrocyclohexane with ammonia in the presence of a nickel skeleton catalyst and in the presence of a nickel-chrome catalyst deposited on pumice. Other methods of carrying out the reduction are referred to, i.e. stannous chloride in an acid medium, nascent hydrogen in an alkaline medium, or catalytic reduction in the presence of catalysts which besides silver and also copper, contain chromium and zinc.
