Class 57 In a spill-type reciprocating liquid-fuel injection pump a in which the amount of spill is controlled by a slidable rack bar b actuated by a speed-governor, the speed-responsive masses e and the bar b are connected by a lever mechanism formed by a pair of articulated and spring-controlled parts normally in alignment and adapted to be deflected laterally relative to each other against the action of the spring, the articulated lever being carried by a manually operable lever v. The masses e are driven by the pump shaft h and connected by bell crank levers i to an axially slidable spindle connected to the bar b by a lever mechanism consisting of a hollow cylinder k pivoted to the bar b and housing a piston q pressed by a spring p on to a collar o of a rod n extending through a transverse slot r in the cylinder k and secured to a forked member m pivotally connected both to the spindle j and, by a pin s, to a forked supporting lever t carried by a pin u and having at one end thereof the manually-operable adjusting lever v. The endwise movement of the bar b is limited by contact of a collar c thereon with an adjustable stop d and the adjacent part of the pump body and when the bar is intermediate these limits the connection between it and the spindle j acts as a rigid lever to transmit movements due to the governor, and movement of the lever v alters the position of the pivot pin s. If the bar is against one of its limit stops, however, further movement of the lever v is catered for by relative movement between the rod n and the cylinder k, the head o tilting in the cylinder and moving the piston q by compressing the spring p.
