Abstract
712,735. Artificial gems. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. Nov. 26, 1952 [Dec. 28, 1951], No. 29883/52. Class 43 In making artificial gems-such as rubies and sapphires, a single crystal of corundum is rendered capable of asteriation through the precipitation of rutile upon subsequent heating, by subjecting the crystal to a preparatory heating at a temperaturebetween 1700‹C and 1950‹C while maintaining a titanium compound in contact with its. surface, whereby some of the titanium compound is diffused into the crystal. The preparatory heating is carried out for at least one hour, the length of the heating period being varied in inverse relation to the temperature, and preferably being for between eight and twenty-four hours, Contact with a titanium compound during the preparatory heating may be effected by embedding the crystals in a mixture comprising titania, or the crystals may be coated with an aqueous mixture which contains titania and is allowed to dry upon the crystal surface prior to the preparatory heating. A suitable aqueous mixture contains 30-40 per cent titania and 60-70 percent alumina. The process may be employed for improving poorly asteriated corundum crystals, and is applicable to corundum crystals of any shape, such as rough natural crystals, or whole or half boules of synthetic corundum, the most desirable products being obtained by treating cabochon gemstones which have been cut from larger crystals of natural or synthetic corundum.
