Abstract
1346500 Protein fibres C Z CARROLLPORCZYNSKI 10 May 1972 [24 May 1971] 16565/71 Heading B5B [Also in Divisions A2 C3 and C6] In a method of manufacturing protein fibre involving extracting the protein content of vegetable matter and forming the protein into fibre by any known method, the vegetable matter employed is the seed and/or the seed offals (husk, bran and residues from any oil extraction process that may be carried out on the seed) of a variety of a crop plant which yields protein capable of being formed into fibres and the variety is a radiation-induced mutant of that crop plant selected for enhanced protein content of its seed offals. Suitable varieties are produced by irradiating triticale seed with 15-20 kilorads exposure to a cobalt 60 source at a rate of 33À7 kilorads/hour at 25‹ C. viz. Triticale polonus, by irradiating the shell and bulk of lupin seeds (Lupinus angustifolia) with 15 or 25 kilorads from a cobalt 60 source at 10 kilorad/minute at 25‹ C., and by subjecting the seed of oil seed rape (Brassica napus) to a similar treatment. The examples describe procedures for the extraction of the protein and the spinning of protein solution into fibres employing spinning baths of specified composition (including preservative). Alginate may be included in the spinning solution or bath in the production of edible protein fibres suitable for the manufacture of simulated meat. Fibres produced for food purposes are preferably of hollow form. Example 4 discloses the production of protein/ acrylic fibres.
