Class 138 (1) A windscreen wiper, Fig. 1, comprises a pair of yokes or other members 2 extending along the back of the squeegee element 3 and a bridge-piece 1 having its opposite ends connected to intermediate points on the yokes or other members, wherein the ends of the bridge-piece are detachably interlocked with the yokes or other members in such a manner that the bridge-piece can only be separated from the yokes or other members by detaching at least one of the latter from the squeegee element, thereby enabling the yokes or other members to be moved relative to the bridgepiece to positions in which they can be detached therefrom. T-shaped heads 5, Fig. 40, at the ends of the bridge can only be inserted in slots 4, Fig. 3, of the yoke members 2 when a yoke is disposed at right angles to the bridge-piece. When the yokes are twisted into alignment with the bridge-piece, the parts cannot be separated owing to the transverse dimension of the slot being less that the length of the T-head. Clip-like lugs 24, 24a, on the ends of the yokes engage flexible strips 25 fitted in grooves in the squeegee element 3. The lugs 24a detachably rest in cut-outs 26, Fig. 3, in the strips 25, in order to prevent movement of the strips relative to the yokes. The connection means between the yokes and the blade is substantially as described in Specification 666,474, and the yokes may be rockably connected to the ends 5 to allow the blade to work transversely of the wiper arm when conforming to a curved windscreen. The wiper arm 21, Fig. 4, is connected to the bridge-piece by moving a projecting end 22 which is received in a substantially rectangular aperture 6 in the back wall 10 of the bridgepiece 1. The end 22 having a dimple 23 is retained in position and the aperture 6 is also then closed by a shutter 7 slidable in the channel of the bridge-piece by means of a spring 9. The shutter has an aperture 8 corresponding to the aperture 6. Movement of the shutter 7 to the left is limited by lugs 19 thereon engaging the ends of slots 20 in the side walls 11 of the bridge-piece. The spring 9 is supported in the stem 13 of a channel-shaped member 14 supported in the channel of the bridge-piece by means of shoulders 16 abutting lugs 15 turned inwardly from the walls 11. The stem 13 passes through a slot 18 in a shutter member 17. The fit between the sides of the end 22 and the sides of the slot 6 may if desired be such as to allow the bridge-piece to rock transversely relative to the wiper arm. In order to increase the arc of wiping and to facilitate parking of the blade, the bridge-piece can twist relative to the arm end against the action of the spring 9 in a similar manner to the construction described in Specification 657,822. Specifications 666,473 and 626,016 also are referred to. According to the first Provisional Specification the bridge-piece may be telescopic or otherwise adjustable in length.
