Abstract

A connector for a windscreen wiper blade and wiper arm, comprises a pair of spaced members or ears having apertures through which extends a pin, the ends of which project beyond the outer surfaces of the members or ears, the pin being surrounded by or associated with one or more springs, preferably helical, which urges or urge the pin into a normal position in which its ends project beyond both members or ears, at least one of the said projecting ends being free to move inwardly longitudinally against the action of the spring or springs. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 a pin 7 having a collar 7a is mounted, for longitudinal movement in one direction only against the action of a helical spring 6, in ears 1, 3 upstanding from the back of the blade 2. The ear 1 is fixed to a channel member 16 secured to the blade by a rivet 17, or sprung thereover, while the ear 3 is movable relative to the ear 1 against the action of the spring. The ear 3 forms one limb of an L- shaped member, the other limb 4 of which'has a slot 18 engaging the stem of a T-shaped member 15 stamped-up from the back of the member 16. A housing 12 attachable to a wiper arm 11 is pivotally connected to the pin 7. The blade may be moved angularly with respect to the arm the slot 18 allowing the ear 3 to pivot at 5 and to move towards the ear 1, against the action of the spring which tends to restore the parts in alignment with the blade. A rivet may be used in lieu of the T-shaped member. If desired angular movement of the blade to only one side of the normal position may be provided by stop or other means. The movable ear may be dispensed with and the spring 6 would then bear at one end on the fixed ear and at the other end against the remote end wall of the housing. In a different form of the invention, Fig. 5, both ears 1, 1a are fixed to a channel member 16a and a collar 7a is provided on the pin 7. The blade can rock in the housing 12a so as to incline to a trailing position as the blade moves over the windscreen and this movement is limited by the ears engaging the side walls of the housing. In order to facilitate assembly of the pin in the housing the end walls of the housing are formed with leading-in portions 19. The housing is provided with two openings 21, 23 of different widths to accommodate standard arms. In a modification, Fig. 7, the pin 27 is provided with a central collar 7b and two springs 26. With the constructions described the housing is reversible and if the blade fitting is off-centre of the length of the blade, the length by which the blade projects from the arm can be changed by reversing the housing on the fitting.
