712,395. Variable-speed gearing. ALARCAO, A. Oct. 11, 1951 [Oct. 13, 1950], No. 25089/50. Class 80 (2) [Also in Group XXXV] In a variable-ratio power transmitting gearing the driving side 2 of a hydraulic transmission device is connected by a tubular shaft 4 to a first sun wheel 7 of an epicyclic train. A planet carrier 11 carrying planet wheels 8 is splined to the shaft 12 supporting the driven member 13 of the hydraulic transmission device. A second sun wheel 14 is fixed to a short hollow shaft 15 supported in a web 17. The shaft 15 carries a bevel wheel 18 which forms the first member of a reversing epicyclic train 18, 23, 25. Bevels 18, 25. have dog-clutch and cone formations for synchronous engagement with a dog-clutch member 21 slidably splined'to the output shaft 22 and actuated by a fork 32 into forward, neutral and reverse positions. Passage of fluid between the hydraulic transmission member and the gear housing is prevented by seals 5a, 12e, 13a. The output shaft 22 rotates at a speed which varies inversely as the slip in the hydraulic tranmission. The hydraulic transmission device may be replaced by a multi-stage fluid coupling or by an electric or magnetic slip coupling. In a modification the epicyclic train is of the spur gear type with interengaging planet pinions, the carrier of which is braked for reverse driving.
