712,167. Lanterns for photographic enlargers and optical projectors. DE VERE (KENSINGTON), Ltd. Feb. 27, 1953 [Dec. 22, 1952], No. 32461/52. Classes 97(1) and 98(1) [Also in Group XI] An illuminating device for a photographic enlarger or optical projector comprises a luminous discharge tube bent or coiled to form a light source of extended area, and a liquid-filled condenser lens, and a diffusing screen each of the same overall shape and size as the light source and disposed in front of the light source. As shown, a discharge tube 2 fed from a transformer 3 and comprising coplanar parallel limbs covering the exit aperture of the lantern is backed by a white diffusely reflecting screen 4 and the exit aperture is covered by a hollow plano-convex plastic lens filled with a liquid such as a mineral oil and having a translucent plane diffusing face 5 adjacent the plane of the negative or other transparency whereby the distribution of illumination thereover is rendered uniform.
