Abstract

Class 110(1) The onset of surging in a multi-stage axial-flow compressor is delayed by influencing the radial distribution of axial velocity at the inlet to the blading. The intake of the compressor is divided into a number of coaxial annular paths by means of one or more surfaces of revolution 5 which may be of sheet metal and preferably extend right up to the first row of blades. Movable shutters 6, 7 and 8 at the entrance to each path can be completely withdrawn from or completely or partly obstruct the respective paths. Alternatively or in addition, shutters 6<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>1</SP> and 8' may similarly be provided at the exit from each path. The shutters may be constructed similarly to an iris shutter of a photographic camera and may be either solid or formed of partly permeable material, say grids or gauze or both. Compressed air can be introduced downstream into any one or all of the paths through one or more pipes 9 having nozzles 10. The supply to the nozzles 10 of each path is controlled by separate valves. When the compressor forms part of a gas turbine plant, the shutters or valves may be connected with the controls of the plant so as to operate automatically during the starting period. The blades 3. 4 are those of the initial stages of a purely axial-flow compressor or of a combined axial-flow and radial-flow compressor.
