Class 81(2) [Also in Group XXV] In a machine for producing continuous lengths of absorbent material suitable for cutting to form dental rolls, a cylindrical body of fibre is bound with threads, some of which are then rendered adhesive. Continuous lengths of cotton fibre 10a, 10b are drawn from supply drums 11a, 11b and shaped into a circular cross-section by a member 16, after which the core, so formed, passes through a braiding machine supplying a number of threads, of which a proportion are of cellulose acetate. The composite cord is drawn forward by a pulley 29 and passed to a chamber 32 wherein nozzles 34 spray it with acetone to soften the cellulose acetate to cause adhesion of the braiding to the absorbent core. It continues through a solvent recovery chamber 35 and drying chamber 36 to a winding mechanism 37. In the arrangement described, the braiding machine applies eight strands each consisting of two threads, one of cotton and the other cellulose acetate. Threads of alternative materials capable of being rendered adhesive by a solvent or heating may be used, and, instead of braiding, two oppositely wound layers of thread may be applied. A slightly looser packing of the fibrous material may be achieved by arranging a central rod-like member to occupy the centre of the fibre core until after the braiding has been applied so that as the composite cord is drawn off it a central hole is left into which. the fibre can expand.
