Abstract

A preparation for the cold-waving or straightening of hair comprises an aqueous solution containing a soluble alkali metal bisulphite and a swelling agent of the formula:- <FORM:0711060/IV(c)/1> wherein X=H, CH3 or NH2 and R and R1=H, alkanol or alkyl, each alkanol or alkyl group containing not more than 4 carbon atoms, the pH of the solution being adjusted to 6.5-7.5 so that the swelling of the hair will be a maximum at room temperature, the swelling agent being used in sufficient amount to swell the hair from 18-110 per cent in one hour at room temperature and the solution containing 1-10 per cent by weight of the bisulphite. Specified swelling agents are urea, formamide, acetamide, mono-ethanol formamide, diethanol formamide, monoisopropanol formamide and diethyl formamide. Buffering may be effected with ammonium acetate or a mixture of alkali metal and acid phosphates.
