Abstract

1,271,504. Coating. UNILEVER Ltd. 18 July, 1969 [19 July, 1968], No. 34528/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions A5, C3 and C4] Example 10 discloses coating polished strips of aluminium (4" x 1" x #") with an ethanolic solution of a 90 : 10 vinyl acetate/crotonic acid copolymer that had been reacted with 90% stoichiometric equivalent of methanolic sodium methoxide solution to form the alkali metal salt of the polymeric product. The specification is directed broadly to the preparation of alkali metal salts of polymeric products comprising an alkenically unsaturated ester and an alkenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, by reacting the polymeric product with 25-100% stoichiometric equivalent of an alkali metal alkoxide containing 1-12 carbon atoms. The physical properties of 0.003 inch films of these polymeric alkali metal salts, cast on glass surfaces, is disclosed in Example 1. The films were readily removed by a spray of water. The polymeric alkali metal salts may be used as binders in water- or polar solventbased coating compositions.
