Abstract
710,787. Spring frames for motor vehicles. ATELIERS DE LA MOTOBECANE. Dec. 31, 1951 [Jan. 29. 1951], No. 30491/51. Classes 136(1), 136(2), and 136(3) In a rear suspension for motor vehicles having chain transmission a single hollow arm 3 is pivoted at its forward end on bearings 9 on a shaft 2 parallel to the axis of the driving sprocket 5 while its other end constitutes both a lateral hub 12 for the rear wheel axle 15 and the support for the brake of the rear wheel 7, the chain 4 passing through the interior of the arm 3 and over the rear wheel sprocket 6. A telescopic member 10 is pivoted at one end to the arm 3 and at the other end to a fixed point 11 on the vehicle chassis. The chain 4 is tightened by displacement of the arm 3 with respect to the driving sprocket 5, the shaft 2 being adjustably supported in slots 20 in two brackets 1 at the rear of the vehicle chassis. Alternatively, eccentric sleeves may be interposed between the brackets 1 and the shaft 2. In a modification the tension of the chain 4 is adjusted by moving the axle 15 with respect to the arm 3. In a further modification the driving sprocket 5 is mounted with its axis coincident with the shaft 2, and the chain is tightened by the rotation of eccentric sleeves interposed between the bearings 9 and the arm 3. The arm 3 is open at its forward end at 25 and has a reinforcing web 23. The sprocket 6 may be removed through an inspection opening 21 in the arm 3.
