710,688. Testing physic qualities of materials. RAVEN, W. G. H. May 14, 1952, No. 12166/52. Class 106 (2) A method of testing concrete and like materials to determine cracking strength, as a guide to the kind of material to be used in a building or like operation comprises the steps of inserting a test piece of cylindrical or other prismatic form between pressure transmission members having oppositely curved convex workengaging surfaces, exposing it to a gradually increasing pressure from the members until it cracks, and measuring the pressure required for such cracking effect. Fig. 4 shows a test piece a in position between two pressure transmitting members b and c of a press. In the particular example described hydraulic pressure is applied and the pressure at which cracking occurs is noted by reading a pressure gauge.
