Abstract
710,512. Ratchet gearing. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Oct. 10, 1951, No. 23572/51. Class 80 (3) [Also in Groups XXVII and XXIX] A device tor causing relative rotation between two members 19, 20, Fig. 1, when an axial load therebetween exceeds a predetermined value, comprises balls 21 situated in arcuate grooves 24 in one member 19, the grooves being deepest centrally, and an annular spring 22 extending between the members such that it deflects when the load exceeds said value to engage the balls which roll to the centres of the grooves causing rotation of the spring and member 20 relatively to the member 19. The invention is described with reference to an internal combustion engine valve 12 wherein member 20 constitutes a seat for valve springs 14, 15. When the valve is closed, spring 22 is undeflected and carries the load due to springs 14, 15 from the member 20 to the member 19. When the valve is opened, the increased load deflects the spring 22 to engage the balls 21 which move to the deepest part 24a, Fig. 8, of the grooves, and cause ratation of the spring 22, member 20, springs 14, 15 and valve 12. Light springs 26, Fig. 5, urge the balls away from part 24a, the direction in which they are urged being reversible due to the shape of the grooves, whereby the valve may be rotated in either direction.
