GOVERNOR-ADJUSTING MEANS FOR EXPLOSIVE-ENGINES.
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I. THEODORE C. MENGES, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Waterloo, Blackhawk countv, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governor-Adiusting Means for Explosive-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
i My invention relates to-improvements in adjusting-means for governors of explosiveengines. and the obiect of my improvement isto afford means for keepingthe governor parts fittingly. adjusted relatively to the shifting-collar or sleeve actuated thereby, so as to prevent binding of either in use which would cause the sleeve to'bind or shift unequally upon its carrying-shaft.
This object I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed. and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the governor with its associated connections as applied operatively to an explosive engine, and embodving my improvement.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the parts shown in said Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the figures, the numeral 26 denotes the fly-wheel, with parts broken away, of an explosive engine. whose hub 25 is secured on the outer end of the shaft 24. On said shaft, but spaced away from said hub 25, is mounted a pinion 28 meshed with a gear-wheel 23, and acam-wheel 22 is made integral with the wheel 23 and adapted to drive a reciproca-torv bar 20 by the contacting roller 21 on the latter. A sleeve 10 is slidably seated on the shaft 24: between the pinion 28 and the hub 25, and has two annular grooves 9 and 11. A ring 27 is secured on the hub 25 and has integral oppositely-projecting arms 29 on whose ends are pintles 6. The governor-arms 5 are pivotally mounted at their angles on the pintles 6 with their inturned members 7 having their diminished extremities 8 seated in the groove 9 of the sleeve 10, movably. The other and longer members of said arms 5 are arranged substantially parallel with the shaft 24 and have integral weights 1 on their ends, the ends of the said weights, which are of an elongated elliptical form, being connected by means of the ten- Specification of Letters Patent.

The numeral 15 denotes a lever pivoted medially at 13 to a. fixed support 1st and has its shorter member provided with a di-. minished head 12 which is movably seated in the other annular groove 11 of said sleeve 10. The left-hand longer part of said lever is transversely orificed to receive one end of a coiled compression spring 30 whose other end bears against a fixed support 31 on the engine frame, through an orifice in which the bar 20 is movable. A set-screw 17 is seated in the interiorly-threaded outer part of the orifice over the spring 30 and is used to place said spring under variable tension, while a stop 16 extends from said lever to engage the said screw to hold it from turning easily.
The outer end of the arm 15 has a shallow groove adapted to receive a small projecting plate 19 secured on the outer face of the bar 20 at times when the arm 15 is swung toward said bar enough to catch said plate and hold it engaged to lock the bar from actuation.
Returning now to the governor-weights 1,
the numeral 2 denotes an exteriorlv-threaded adiusting-screw movable through an interiorly-threaded open ng in the weight 1, each weight having a like installation, and secured in an adiusted position therethrough by a nut 3. The inner end of the screw 2 is adapted to bear against the hub 25. In case there is an inequality in the hub. such as a different radial distance therethrough which would cause one screw to engage the hub while leaving the other like screw on the opposite side spaced apart therefrom, the adjusting-screw 2 on such spaced-away weight may be turned to bring it into contact with said hub. so that both screws may be in contact with the hub at the same time. This adjustment is important and necessary, because if either of the screws were to be separated from said huba distance while the other screw was in contact with the hub, the on spaced away would be by the connected springs 4i drawn into contact with the hub in such a manner as to shift the leverarm 5 to cause its head 8 to engage the further side-wall of the groove 9, which would thus exercise an oblique shift of the sleeve 1.0 on said shaft 24 to bind the shaft when the other arm 5 would be acted upon by the governor-Weight on that side to slide said sleeve. As the latter action Would-cause the other arm to engage the sleeve-groove 9 sooner than the first-mentioned arm, the sleeve Would bind the shaft and With imperfect shifting or swinging of the lever 15, tending to nullify the action oi the latter. My adjusting-device therefore acts to keep the heads on both arms in'the groove 9 on said sleeve 10 in the same midway positions without binding either wall of the groove, so that they can act simultaneously to shift the sleeve Without binding of the latter. In engines Where the hubs are not machined to be perfect cylinders, but may be somewhat deformed, this adjustinentis peculiarly necessary in order to prevent imperfect action of the governor upon the ignition-device.
Having described my inventioinivhat 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
i. The combination with a rotary body, of an annularly-grooved sleeve siidable thereon, like levers fulerumed on opposite sides of said body With like inturned ends seated movably in the annular groove on said sleeve, Weights on the other ends of said. levers yieldable resilient connections between said Weights, and adjustable regulating means mounted independently on said. Weights and engaging opposite sides of said rotary body adapted to act adjustingly upon said levers to keep their inturned ends in like positions in said annular groove to engage simultai'ieously the Walls of said groove.
2. The combination with a rotary body, of an annularly-grooved sleeve. slidable thereon, like levers fulcruined on opposite sides of said body with their like int-urned ends seated movably in the annular groove on said sleeve, weights on the other ends of said levers integral therewith, a pair of yieldable resilient connections between op posite ends of said weights, and. adjustable regulating means. comprising adjustingscreWs passed in alinement through the middles of the-Weights tobear adjustably-upon opposite sides of the rotary body, to keep the said levers positioned to exercisea simultaneous traction on said sleeve.
