`accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
rl'his invention has particular relation to the application of an internal combustion engine to a use in which, under certain conditions, the speed of the engine should be controlled automatically by a governor while, under other conditions, higher engine speed is required without the necessity for governor control. buch a use, for example, is that to which an engine is applied when it furnishes the power for a readily transportable search-light and may be employed at one time in driving the generator of the search-light apparatus and at another time in driving the truck; upon which the searchlight and engine 'are mounted for the purpose of changing the location of the searchlight. ln accordance with the invention there are provided means, usually embodied in some form of clutch and therefore referred tovhereinafter, for convenience', as a clutch, between the governor and its driving means, whereby the governor can readily be connected to or disconnected from its driving means. 'lhe invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings in which it is illustrated, and in whichlfigure l is a detail view, partly in elevation and partly in section, illustrating particularly the-relation of the governor, its driving means, and the interposed clutch, a portion of the engine also being shown.
lfigs. 2 and 3 are detail views, on a larger scale of the clutch device.
ln Fig. l of the drawings there is shown an internal combustion engine which may be of any desired type indicated generally at e.
The governor, indicated generally at g and of suitable construction, is adapted to control, through suitable linkage g', the throttle valve c2 of the engine so as to regulate the speed of the engine. ln the arrange ment shown in the drawings this governor is driven from the crank shaft e of the engine through suitable gearing, indicated at g2 and j". The vertical shaft, by which the governor is directly driven, has two independent parts gL and g5, adapted to be con nected by an interposed clutch device, shown generally at 7i and comprising, in the con struction shown, a circumferentially grooved sleeve member it suitably connected with the shaft member gt and notched, as at h2, to
` engage the toothed end gs of the shaft member g5.; lin operating lever its is suitably mounted in the casing kt, its end projecting through a cam slot lo in an operating and locking plate which is pivotally mounted, as at 702, on the casing l/lhen the locking and controlling plate 'c is swung to the right, in Fig. 2, the clutch sleeve it is raised and held out of engagement with the shaft'member g5, so that the governor is then disconnected from its driving means, while if the locking and control ling plate 7c is swung to the left, the clutch sleeve 7L is moved into engagement with the shaft member g so that the governor is then driven from the engine shaft and operates in the usual manner to control the speed of 'the engine.
lt will be obvious that the invention may be applied to engines and governors of different forms and that the construction in which it is embodied may be varied in each instance to suit the conditions of use.
Vile claim as our invention:
'lhe combination with an internal combustion engine, of a governor to control the speed thereof, gearing and a two-part shaft whereby the governor is driven from the engine shaft, a separable clutch interposed between the two parts of the two-part shaft and including a grooved sleeve member, an operating lever engaging said sleeve member and a manually operable pivoted operating and locking plate having an eccentric cam slot with which said lever is engaged where by the sleeve is held in or out of driving re lation to the two ,parts of the shaft.
rlhis specification signed this 29th day of June, lll. D. 1918.
