Abstract

710,415. Control of D.C. motors. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 24. 1951 [April 27, 1950], No. 9518/51. Class 38(3) A direct-current motor has its armature 1 supplied through rectifier 2 and its field winding 4 through rectifier 5 which is controlled by means of high-vacuum valve 8. A grid 10 of the valve 8 is subjected to the armature voltage of the motor in opposition to a negative potential derived through resistor 18 from source 14, so that, during the starting period, the valve 8 is cut off and the rectifier 5 supplies full voltage to the winding 4 until the armature voltage reaches a predetermined value whereupon the control of the valve 8 is transferred to grid 9. The valve 8 is then controlled in accordance with the difference of potentials derived respectively from a speed-setting potentiometer 13 and the field winding 4, so allowing high speed operation of the motor with reduced field excitation.
