Abstract
A zircon ore is heated with or without an addition of alkali metal oxide-yielding material to a temperature sufficient to decompose it to zirconia and glass, and the product is heated at 75-250 DEG C. with a 10-15 per cent. solution of sodium or potassium hydroxide for 1-60 hours to separate the silicate from the zirconia. If the zircon is heated alone the temperature should be 1800 DEG C. and the product should be quenched to to prevent reformation of zirconium silicate; if glassforming constituents are added, e.g. in the proportion of 0.02 to 0.50 mols per mol of zircon, lower temperatures may be used and quenching is unnecessary. The glass-forming addition may contain up to 2 per cent. of borax. The grain size of the zirconia produced varies directly with the temperature and with the amount of alkali added, and particles of controlled sizes between 1 and 50 microns may be obtained. The process may be applied to hafnium-containing zirconium ores from which pure hafnia may be subsequently separated.
