Abstract

709,323. Fluid pressure brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO.. Ltd. March 18, 1953 [April 18, 1952], No. 9843/52. Class 103(1) In a fluid pressure servo-unit for hydraulic braking systems the hydraulic motor, operated by pressure from the control master cylinder 25 by pipe 27, space 28 and passage 29, and which controls the action of the valve unit 33 whereby atmospheric pressure is applied to one side of the vacuum suspended servo-piston 15 comprises large and small coaxial piston elements 56 and 54. As hydraulic pressure is built up in chamber 59, as a result of actuation of the master cylinder 25, initially both pistons 56 and 54 are moved to deflect the diaphragm 53, thrust from the piston 56 being transmitted to piston 54 by a spring 62. At a certain pressure piston 56 seats upon a shoulder 61 and thereafter only the pressure on the piston rod area 55 is operative to control the valve. This construction provides a valve operation which is sufficiently sensitive in the initial stage but which also requires a higher hydraulic pressure for operation in the later stages of a brake application.
