Abstract
709,139. Pipe joints. DRESSER INDUSTRIES, Inc. Nov. 20, 1951 [Oct. 26, 1951], No. 27231/51. Class 99 (1). A clamp for compressing a packing ring 30 to seal a leaky caulked joint 18 comprises an anchor ring 25 engaging a shoulder of the socket 14, a clamping ring 20 formed from a number of interconnected arcuate segments, and a plurality of bolts 32 extending between the anchor ring and lugs 48 on the clamping ring, the bolts being inclined at, say, 12 degrees to the axis of the joint, converging towards the clamping ring. One end of each ring segment is provided with a number of teeth 57 in the form of a rack adapted to engage a complementary rack 70 at the end of an adjacent segment. The segments are secured by a bolt passing through a bolt-hole 60 and slot 75, the arrangement being such that the circumference of the composite ring may be varied slightly to accommodate variations in. the diameters of standard pipes. One of the lugs 48 is located adjacent an end of the segment, and the surface of the clamping ring is made to correspond with the shape of the packing ring, preferably having a radial face 34, an inclined face 35, and an axial face 37. To ensure continuity of these pressure surfaces, one or more filler pieces 100, Figs. 7 and 12, are inserted, when necessary, between the ends of the segments.
