[Also in Group VIII] A laminated material for use as a base for plaster consists of a sheet 2 of paper, felt, corrugated cardboard, fibreboard, or strawboard to which a reinforcement of reticulated metal strips 1, corrugated or deformed for increased rigidity, is secured by pronged metal clips or by passing through slits 5 formed in the sheet 2, while a further set of strips 4, crossing the strips 1, is located between them and the sheet 2. The reinforcing strips 1, which may be of expanded metal or perforated strip steel, corrugated longitudinally or formed as angles, tees, or channels, are additionally secured to the sheet 2 by turning them over at the ends 3 to grip the sheet. The cross reinforcing strips 4 may be similar to strips 1 or may be of steel bar, wood lath, or bamboo ; the whole or part of the cross reinforcement may be in long lengths inserted, after the plaster base has been fixed, so as to connect two or more sheets. The sheet 2 may be perforated or slit to form short, ribbon-like ends of sheet material to key with mortar or cement. When the perforated and reinforced material is used as a lathing for the application of mortars to one side only, e.g. for ceilings, it may be backed by unperforated sheet material to prevent pattern staining or to act as insulation. A corner bead for use at angles is made of plaster or concrete reinforced with reticulated metal strip which is used to attach it to the reinforcement of the plasterbase. Building units may be made by casting plaster or cement upon one or between two sheets of the plaster base, together with reinforcing bars or stiffeners. The reticulated metal may project beyond the edges of the units, and the projections on adjacent units may be connected by clips, dogs, or steel strip or may simply overlap, before the joints between the units are filled with cement or mortar. The plasterbase may be used as a permanent shuttering, in place of the usual wooden or steel formwork, for concrete cast as columns, beams, floors, or roofs; it may form at the same time a casing for steel columns, beams, trusses &c.
