Abstract
708,733. Moulding brushes. SCHIFFER, M., and SCHIFFER, C. June 6, 1951, No. 13451/51. Class 87 (2) The bristles (made of plastic material) are formed into bundles, then the bristles of each bundle are fused together to form heads serving to anchor the bundles in the brush body, then the headed bundles are automatically introduced into the mould cavity, and finally the brush body is moulded in the mould cavity around the said heads. The drawings show injection-moulding apparatus for doing this, comprising a stationary mould half 1 and a movable mould half 2 between which is formed a mould cavity 3 fed with plastic material through bushes 4. The bristles are supplied from bobbins (not shown) and are fed in bundles B through holes 7 formed in two plates 5, 6 and' in mould part 2. Plate 6 is fixed in mould part 2. Plate 5 is movable and is controlled mechanically by the machine or electrically by a magnet, and may be moved to clamp the bundles against plate 6. In operation, starting from the Fig. 1 position in which four brush bodies have been moulded around the heads of the bundles, the mould part 2 opens to the Fig. 4 position through a distance that determines the length of the brush bristles. During this opening movement plate 5 is released from plate 6, and the mould part 2 and plates 5, 6 silde over the bristles. Then the magnet moves plate 5 to clamp the bristles fast, and the mould part 2 opens further (Fig. 5) to pull the brush bodies out of the mould part 1. Four knives 10, heated by plates 8, then move inwards to melt off the bristles embedded in. the brush bodies and to fuse together the ends of the bristles in each bundle projecting from the plates. The mould then closes to the Fig. 1 position, the bristles being pulled from the spools.
