Abstract

<PICT:0708700/III/1> Multilayer objects, such as pads or booklets, of detergent foils or films have the foils stuck together in places by local pressing, so that single foils in a dry condition can only be separated from one another by tearing or cutting. The use of wire staples, threads and glue is avoided. A base, such as thin cardboard, may be used for the pack of foils, moistened before pressing on the side of the foil at the pressure point. The base may be foled to form a cover on both sides, and in the form shown, a denotes the top cover, b the pack of foils, and c the point of pressure where the foils have been fixed one below the other and on to the base. The foils may be fixed not only to the base but also to the top cover. The pressure can be applied by rimmed flat bars or only partially pressing contacting surfaces so that the foils are stuck together by pressure at the desired place, preferably at one of the shorter ends of the pack. The foils can be prepared by drying a solution of a detergent, coated on a suitable base, and shaving off the dried detergent with a tool adapted to skim off shavings. Suitable detergent solutions comprise:-(1) powdered sodium dodecylsulphate and Glauber or common salt dissolved in a 15 per cent. aqueous solution of a polyvinyl alcohol of average molecular weight 12,000; (2) the same powdered detergent and glycerine dissolved in a 16 per cent. aqueous solution of commercial methylcellulose; (3) powdered sodium benzene sulphonate and Glauber salt dissolved in an 18 per cent. aqueous solution of a polyvinyl alcohol as in (1); and (4) powdered Marseilles soap dissolved in the polyvinyl alcohol solution of (1). The polyvinyl alcohol may be obtained by the partial saponification of polyvinyl acetate.
