Abstract

708,687. Electron beam apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 17, 1952 No. 6854/52. Class 39(1) [Also in Group XL(c)] An electron discharge tube for indicating the coincidence of two or more voltage pulses comprises a central cathode 24, a squirrel cage formation of grid wires 25 for forming a plurality of radial electron paths to a common anode 26, and an independent control electrode 27 between each electron path. A focusing grid 35 and a helical screen grid 29 may be provided. The control electrodes 27 are in the form of radial vanes and are provided at their rear ends with flanges 28 projecting to either side. Voltages are applied to the control electrode so that each pair of adjacent control electrodes functions as a gate to the intermediate electron stream; at a given low potential on all the control electrodes the gates are closed. while at a given higher potential all the gates are fully open. Voltage pulses are applied to each control electrode, or to each pair of diametrically opposite control electrodes connected together, and if the voltage pulses are all coincident all the gates are fully opened, and maximum output is derived from the anode. If however this condition is not fulfilled, an adjacent. pair of control electrodes are at different potentials, and the intermediate electron stream is at least partially collected on the control electrode of higher potential. The current flow to this electrode is then utilized through the external circuit connections to partially close the other electron gates. Thus a lower output is derived from the anode, indicating non-coincidence. Data is given as to particular dimensions of the electrodes and spacings, and as to suitable values for the external circuit components. Values of interelectrode capacities are also given. Examples are given of results obtained. The invention comprises also a circuit arrangement including four separate cathode-ray tubes, each tube providing a current path corresponding to an electron path in a single discharge tube such as described above (see Group XL(c)).
