Abstract

The invention comprises 1 : 3 : 5-triazine derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0708256/IV (b)/1> (wherein R represents a monocyclic nitrogen-containing aromatic heterocyclic radical which may contain electron-attracting groups as substituents) and non-toxic acid addition salts thereof, and the preparation of the bases by reacting guanidine with a heterocyclic nitrile R-CN. The products are active as amoebicides. In examples (1) guanidine is refluxed with 3-cyanopyridine in alcohol to produce 2-amino-4 : 6-di-(31-pyridyl)-1 : 3 : 5-triazine, which may be converted into its hydrochloride by warming with concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid, or into its pentahydrochloride by warming with concentrated hydrochloric acid and ethanol; reference is also made to the preparation of the dimethiodide by treating the base with methyl iodide in acetone; (2) guanidine is refluxed with 4-amino-2-methyl-5-cyanopyrimidine in alcohol to produce 2-amino-4 : 6-di-(41-amino - 21 - methylpyrimidyl - 51) - 1 : 3 : 5 - triazine, which yields a pentahydrochloride as in (1).
