Abstract

Thiazolidine carboxylic acid <FORM:1041787/C2/1> is prepared by reacting cysteine with formaldehyde in oxygen-free distilled water; crystallization is encouraged by addition of ethanol and the crude product is recrystallized from boiling water and dried, to give a product melting at 198 DEG to 199 DEG C. with decomposition. The acid is useful in hepatotropic pharmaceutical compositions (see Division A5).ALSO:Hepatotropic compositions for internal administration, comprise a suitable pharmaceutical carrier with thiazolidine carboxylic acid: <FORM:1041787/A5-A6/1> The composition suitably takes the form of an oral tablet, with starch, kaolin, gelatin and talc, or may be employed in sterile isotonic solution.
