Abstract

708,127. Magnetic compositions. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES. Ltd. July 12, 1951 [Sept. 19, 1950; April 23. 1951], No. 16532/51. Class 38(2) A ferromagnetic material suitable for permanent magnets, having a retentivity Br of at least 1200 Gauss and needing a field strength I H C for disappearance of the magnetization of at least 700 Oersted, comprises non-cubic crystals of mixed oxides of iron and one or more of the metals (M) barium, strontium and lead. Calcium may replace up to two fifths of these last metals. The crystals are generally hexagonal and may have the structure of magneto-pluinbite, and their permanent magnetic properties are related to the small grain size of the material. The material may have the formula MO6Fe 2 O 3 ; an alternative, Ba Fe 18 O 27 is also described. Up to 40 per cent of impurities may be allowable as a separate phrase. A large number of examples are described in which Fe 2 O 3 and carbonates of M are ground in a ball mill with alcohol (or ethanol) and some or all of the following steps are carried out. These steps are, drying the mixture, sieving. presintering once or twice, mixing with a binder, extruding or moulding into rods which are air dried, and sintering in air for 3-20 min. at a temperature between 900‹ and 1450‹C but preferably above 1100‹C. In producing the BaFe 18 O 27 the method is slightly different and includes sintering in CO 2 . An example is also described in which the Fe 2 O 3 is replaced by actual magnetite. Values of Br (up to 2155 Gauss) and of I H C (up to 3900 Oersted) are stated for each example. The pore volume may be less than 15 per cent. The materials, which have high specific resistance, may be used for magnetic recording purposes.
