Class 23 [Also in Group XL(a)] A static unit for cleansing gas containing dust or droplets of liquid comprises one or more whirling vane-sets 25, 26 in a cylinder 10 and disc-like electrodes 38 ... 42 used to concentrate the suspended matter inside the cylinder, the unit, preferably being made entirely of metal such as cast iron, steel or the like. Cleaned gas passes through an outlet 16 and the removed matter through a slot 22. In Fig. 1, a disc 38 is arranged before the first vane ring 25 and acts as a baffle plate to prevent gas flowing through an opening 31. In a further arrangement, Fig. 6 (not shown) the insulated electrode 32 stops short of the vanes 25 and a plate seals the opening 31. The conical skirt 21, shown in Fig. 1, may be dispensed with. A high electrical potential is impressed between the electrodes and the tube 10. Fig. 4 shows a number of units 58 contained within a casing 52 having an outlet 54 for the cleaned gas, and a discharge hopper 56 for the removed matter. Electrode rods 32 are carried in frame members 33, attached to members 59, suspended from a yoke bar 61 which is carried on an insulator 62. Insulating bushings 66 are provided. The electrodes may be energized by earthing the casing 52 and connecting a supply cable 67 as shown. Fig. 7 (not shown) is another arrangement including nozzles which spray liquid into the gas, very little gas being required.
