Abstract
Lithium aluminium hydride is prepared by reacting a solution of aluminium bromide in an anhydrous solvent with a suspension of lithium hydride in an anhydrous liquid which is the same as the solvent or miscible therewith. Ether or tetrahydrofuran are suitable. The lithium hydride need not be crushed and may be of peanut to hazelnut size and suspended by agitation. The suspension, e.g. in ether, is heated to boiling, under reflux, and the solution, also in ether, added dropwise with agitation. On cooling and filtering an ethereal solution of lithium aluminium hydride saturated with lithium bromide is obtained, which may be used as such for hydrogenation after which the spent solution, freed from lithium bromide, may be reused for lithium aluminium hydride production. Alternatively, lithium bromide may be removed from the ethereal solution and the lithium aluminium hydride separated as a solid. Lithium gallium hydride may be similarly prepared.
