Abstract

<PICT:0707412/III/1> In the drum-drying of animal and vegetable glues, the film scraped off the drum passes through a pair of chilling rollers rotating at a slower peripheral speed than the drum whereby the film is crinkled as it leaves the drum. The crinkling prevents adherence of the glue film to the conveyer in a subsequent drying operation. Glue solution from a heated reservoir 20 is fed to a container 14 the overflow from which is recycled to the reservoir 20. From container 14 glue is fed on to a steam-heated drum 10 by an adjustably mounted feed roller 15 which may be steam-heated or water-cooled. The glue-film is maintained on the durm 10 by compressed air from a pipe 27 directed by a baffle 29 and by compressed air from a pair of blowers 30. It is removed from the drum by a knife 31 which has steam directed against its edge from a pipe 34. Compressed air is directed against the outside surface of the film by pipes 37 and 38 to produce surface-hardening. The film now passes between chilling rollers 41 and 42 rotating at a slower peripheral speed than the drum 10 and which are respectively chromium-plated and of steel, the roller 42 being the cooler. The glue sticks to roller 42, is removed by a knife 43 and passes on an endless conveyer 45 through an apron drier comprising three compartments heated to progressively higher temperatures. At the outlet of compartment 49 the film is given a final surface-hardening by a fan 55 and then comminuted.
