707,398. Gripping devices for handling bottles; manifold arrangements. RIDOUT, A. T. May 2, 1952 [Feb. 6, 1951]. No. 2876/51. Class 78 (4) [Also in Groups XVII and XXIII] A flexible sheet d formed with one or more holes for supporting bottles by their necks is held between a pair of rigid plates b c, formed with similar but larger holes and rendering the sheets d sufficiently inflexible to support the bottle or bottles : to release the bottle or bottles the plate b is lowered a limited extent from the plates c. In the form illustrated the sheet d is of rubber and is secured by rivets engaging a thin plate e to the plate c, and the plate b is held in the position illustrated by springs k acting between a plate h joined by rods g to the plate b and a plate i joined by a tube j to the plate c. A plate m moving with the plate h carries rubber or other pads o which, when the plate h is depressed, forcibly eject the bottles from the holes in the sheet d. Slits in the-sheet d adjacent the bottle-receiving holes may increase its flexibility br the sheet d may be replaced by a plurality of separate' shaped sheets disposed in the same plane. The device may be a hand tool or form part of a machine. According to the Provisional Specification, where the bottles have straight necks the plates c, d, e may be omitted and the sheet d made sufficiently thick to hold the bottle necks without sagging.
