773,469. Tempering glass sheets. LIBBEY-OWENS-FORD GLASS CO. Aug. 15, 1955 [Aug. 30, 1954], No. 23386/55. Class 56. Relates to the construction of the chilling-medium blastheads 9 between a pair of which the glass sheet 5,.suspended from an overhead carriage 1, 2, is carried for tempering. Each blasthead comprises a number of generally rectangular tubes 68 carried by a channel-section frame 60, the tubes extending at between 10 and 20 degrees to the horizontal plane, preferably at 14 degrees. Chilling medium is passed through conduits 69, 70, 71 to side and central manifolds; the side manifolds 72, 73 communicating with the side, top and bottom members of the frame 60, and the central manifold 78 communicating directly with the tubes 68 (except the shortest ones). The sides of the tubes nearest to the glass are shaped as shown in Fig. 9 to form what would be a continuous slot along the tube directed towards the glass, but portions of this slot are stopped off by baffles 96 so that a series of spaced apart orifices 100 are provided along each tube. These orifices discharge the chilling medium at an angle of about 60 degrees to the vertical plane containing the glass sheet. Adjustable deflectors 109 are mounted above the orifices. Portions of the tubes adjacent the tongs by which the sheets are suspended from the carriage are set back somewhat. Valve members 140 may be mounted in the tubes. The frames carrying the blastheads are secured to overhead carriages 18 so that they may be moved transversely of the glass to a limited extent.
