Abstract

813,107. Bending and tempering glass. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Sept. 23, 1955, No. 27181/55. Class 56. The mould on which glass sheets are supported during bending and tempering comprises a central section 312, Fig. 20; and end sections 315, 316. Arms 331 are rigidly secured to the end sections and are pivoted on rods 323 as extending between, and rigidly secured to, the side members 317, 318 of the central section. The other ends of the arms are rigidly secured to transverse rods 332 the free ends of which are slidable on guides 334 formed on the carriage 307... 310, stops 335 preventing sideways movement of the mould on the carriage and other stops 336 limiting the sliding movement of the rods. Adjustable stops 338, 341 control the relative movements of the mould sections 312, 315, 316. The angle members 310 of the carriage rest upon positively rotated stub rolls 13. Fig. 1, by which the moulds are passed through the preliminary lehr 20, the electrically heated glass-bending section 25, and between the members of the tempering and cooling apparatus 100, 100A, 100B. The gap between the ends of the stub rolls 13 allows the centre sections 312 of the mould to lie below the plane of the conveyer as referred to in Specification 813,108. The tempering apparatus 100, Fig. 8, which forms the subject-matter of Specification 813,109, comprises adjustable nozzle members protruding from the web portion of channelshaped hollow members 123, 184 the hollow leg portions of which are adjustably carried in upper and lower boxes 110, 114 (two of each) to which tempering air is supplied from conduits 103, 104, Fig. 1, through branches 106, 112 respectively. The boxes 110, 114 form a unit which is mounted for eccentric movement about vertical shafts 219, flexible connections being provided between the boxes and the air conduits. As shown the nozzles 173 adjacent the severelycurved portions of the glass 311 project from specially-shaped end sections 160 adjustably carried by the upper box 110, in a manner generally similar to the members 123. The coolers 100A, B are similar to the unit 100 except that they remain stationary. End sections complementary in shape to the sections 160 may be provided for the lower boxes.
