Abstract

707,266. Electrostatic filters. INDUSTRIAL & FINANCIAL ASSOCIATION, Inc. Feb. 2, 1952, No. 2826/52. Class 39(1) In an electrostatic precipitator having an oil seal 6, Fig. 1, a substantial distance clear above the roof 1 of the precipitation chamber through which passes an electrode supporting rod 3 functioning also as a high tension lead, a tube 12 surrounds the rod 3 and extends from the trough of the oil seal to the roof 1 through which it passes via a sand seal 15. The oil seal is preferably about two metres above the roof 1. Members 1, 6, 12 are earthed so that tube 12 and rod 3 form an auxiliary precipitator unit inside which the gas is almost stationary so that dust cannot reach the oil seal 6. Rod 3 carries frame 4 supporting the electrodes. Oil trough 6 rests on support 5, and rod 3 is secured by collars 7 to cross-piece 8 carried d by insulators, Fig. 2 (not shown). A conical hood 10 fixed to rod 3 has a skirt 11 dipping into the oil bath. Lead tube 12 is supported by split clips 13 secured to iron strips fixed to the support 5, and is toothed at its lower end to assist dripping. Rod 3 is preferably coated with lead. The precipitator may be used in non- ferrous metallurgy and in the chemical industry for removing dust from gases, or for cleaning them, e.g. in the manufacture of sulphuric acid. An attendant can walk round the roof which is provided with access means to the precipitator parts for cleaning. Prior art arrangements for avoiding contamination of the oil seal involving injection of dry SO 2 or air, or heating, are referred to.
