Abstract

In an apparatus for contacting and separating gases by means of granular absorbent material, a bed of the material is held in a vessel traversed by the gas and is supported on a perforated tray from each of the holes in which depends a short tube, a second apertured tray being swingably mounted immediately under the tubes so that in one position it closes all the tubes whilst in another position some of the tubes are uncovered so that material can pass therethrough, continuous oscillation of the tray causing a steady downflow of material through the vessel. The device is particularly applicable to the gas purifying apparatus described in Specification <PICT:0707178/III/1> <PICT:0707178/III/2> 695,355. In the form shown, the vessel is of vertical, cylindrical form and houses four louvred, parallel partitions 9 and 11. A gas inlet space 10 is provided between partitions 11, the gas passing horizontally through the contact material to outlet spaces 8. The material is supported on a plate 12 which has rows of holes 13 therein, the top end of a short tube 14 being secured in each hole. Beneath the lower ends of the tubes is a horizontal tray 15 which is suspended by links 16 from shafts 17 and 18. When hanging freely, baffle plates 21 on tray 15 close all the tubes, but movement to one side or the other uncovers half of the tubes and allows contact material to flow therethrough into a hopper 3. The rate of flow of material through the vessel is controlled by the amplitude and frequency of oscillation of tray 15.
