Abstract
A plain bearing (see Group XXXIV) is made of a composite material comprising a backing 2 of steel or other material, a layer 3 of Cu-Pb, which may contain 10 per cent.-50 per cent. of Pb, bonded to the backing, a layer 4 of Cu or high Cu alloy, and an overlay 5 of Sn or Sn alloy. In place of pure Cu for the layer 4 a Cu-bronze containing 8 per cent. Sn and 92 per cent. Cu, or a Cu-brass containing 30 per cent. Zn and 70 per cent. Cu may be used. The layer 5 may consist of pure Sn or Sn alloy containing up to 15 per cent. Cu or up to 30 per cent. antimony or up to 20 per cent. Zn or any combination of such additional metals with or without up to 10 per cent. of a hardening constituent such as Ni, the Sn content to be not less than 70 per cent. The layer 4 reacts with layer 5 at high temperature to provide a Cu-Sn barrier layer which prevents the diffusion of Sn from layer 5 through layer 3 and the formation of a low-melting point eutectic.
