Abstract

The invention comprises flexible and transparent solid copolymers of ethylene and a minor proportion, preferably 5 to 30 per cent. of N-vinyl carbazole. They may be made under superatmospheric pressure, at a temperature between 60 DEG and 300 DEG C., if desired in the presence of a catalyst. Specified catalysts are oxygen, benzoyl peroxide, tert. butyl peroxide, persulphates, azobisisobutyronitrile and azodicyclohexanecarbonitrile. The pressure is generally from 500 to 2,000 or more atmospheres. The reaction may be effected continuously and in solution in an organic solvent such as benzene, or in water. The copolymer may be obtained as a solution in hot benzene or may be dissolved in toluene at 100 DEG C. and is precipitated by methanol. The products are useful as films and in sheathing cables and as interlayers in safety glass. Specifications 583,804 and 592,487 are referred to.
